Voting

Just returned from voting. We originally went at 9am but there were long queues, so we decided to come back much later, voted at 4:45 and it only took a few minutes. thumb-001.jpg

As usual the parties were camped outside the place. I loved the COPE stand with the poster held up by the Amstel beer box. vote-beer.jpg

Zimbabwe and Friday the 13th

We had a good laugh about this one in the office.

Zimbabwe’s parliament passed a constitutional bill today to allow a coalition government of President Robert Mugabe and opposition rivals, being set up under a deal to end political and economic crisis.

Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai agreed last week to join a unity government with Mugabe’s Zanu-PF after months of wrangling over ministerial posts had stalled a power-sharing deal signed last year.

The vote?yesterday was the first concrete step by the two parties to meet a deadline set by leaders from the Southern Africa Development Community for a unity government to be in place by February 13th….

From this article

You have to admit that who ever decided to do this on Friday the 13th has a bit of a sense of humor ;-P Only better date might of been April 1st, although who knows that might end up being South Africa’s election date.

Apple’s ad for the Red Ipod

I’m not sure if you got an email too from Apple about the Red iPod and how its the perfect gift for Valentines day, I’ve included the letter that they sent with the add in this post below. (If I’m not allowed to post it please let me know.) It’s an awesome piece of writing, had me laughing every second.

Although I do think I would have to give my girlfriend alot more than a red iPod to get her to allow me to replace the sofa and sell her car…

The Price of Piercing

Price of PiercingMy girlfriend and I were chatting about piercings a few days ago, sparked by a friend of a friend of a friend mentioning that they have a nipple piercing (on a girl) and the conversation went sortof downhill from there as we chatted about what the most painful place or most awkward place to be pierced would be. My Girlfriend only has pierced ears, I have none so it envovled lots of guess work, but we decided that neither of us are adventurous enough to get any in any other places.

A few days later this picture from the Washington Post came across my screen via twitter (I think). After reading all the notes on the picture I realise that have piercing in other places may not be such a great idea.

*sigh* I can see that I’ll be getting comments about this post 🙂

Best Job in the World

Best Job in the WorldI’m probably a bit late about posting this one, but in case you’ve missed it here it is.

You could be the caretaker of a small island off the coast of Australia, the job requires you to feed the fish, clean a pool, go for long walks on beautiful sandy beaches, live in a luxury home, go hiking and snorkeling and picking up the mail delivered by plane. I wonder if it includes internet access? The pay for this job isn’t bad either $105000 (I assume Australian $’s) to spend 6 months on the island.

The site advertising the job www.islandreefjob.com crashed under the load of thousands of people applying for the position, but it is back up so you can go apply.

SARS Extends Tax Deadline

SARS has extended the deadline for sub-mitting e-filing returns.

Additional time has been set aside for the submission of income tax returns, the SA Revenue Service has said.

Taxpayers using eFiling have until February 5 to submit their income tax returns electronically, SARS said. Until January 23 – the initial deadline – SARS will complete and capture returns electronically at any SARS office.

After that date all returns will have to be submitted electronically via eFiling. “Taxpayers who encounter problems are advised to go to a SARS branch office for assistance.”

From IOL – 15 January 2009

The reason given by SARS for the extension is that the e-filing website has been unable to handle the load of all the people submitting Tax returns. I do suggest that you check with your local SARS office and make sure that this news story is correct (assuming you can get through).

I love cooking…

I love cooking, I’m not sure if I’m any good at it (you’ll have to ask my girlfriend) but I do enjoy it. There is something therapeutic about chopping, stirring, frying etc something in the kitchen. Now that I don’t live alone I don’t get to experiment with all the crazy things I come up, which is a pity as alot of those turned out rather good in the past.

I’ve always loved Jamie Oliver as a chef, not because of his recipes or anything like that… but because he had this attitude of anyone can do this, it doesn’t have to be rocket science and its ok to make a mess in the kitchen. If you watch any of his shows you’ll see that he actually ends up with flour on his shirt and his kitchen looking alittle bit of a mess, he sticks his hands in and gets them dirty and the whole time he’s cooking he looks like he’s having fun.?

If you watch Nigella Lawson’s cooking programs you’ll see that she often cooks in a fancy dress (I remember a red one she wore often) and she’ll make something that when us mere mortals cook it we would end up covered in flour from head to toe, she won’t have a spec on her.?Other shows annoy me because everything is “prepared before hand” so they just pour the bowl of chopped onions in, you don’t see the guy chopping them with tears in there eyes… so it feels a little “un-natural”.

While searching for a Jamie Oliver recipe I heard about (I only own one of his books… they a bit pricey) I stumbled across his website. It’s actually a very nice site, its got a few free recipes, some video and a ton of info. But whats really impressive is that they have a whole community built up round the site with people contributing there own recipe’s or changes to Jamie’s, and they have stories on there too about when they cooked something or the time it went wrong.

Nomadness

I’m putting this post here so that I don’t forget about this blog. (http://www.nomadness.com/blog/)

It’s about a Techno Nomad who travels around on a huge boat that fitted out with all kinds of cool geeky gadgets. I’ve been reading about his adventures over a number of years which started off with a Bicycle equipped with lots of cool computer gear and slowly evolved into amphibious boats and finally ending up with this huge sail boat.?

It’s an awesome site if you’re interested in gadgets, sailing or just travelling and is very well written and includes tons of pictures. I also like his cat that lives aboard the ship called “Java”.
